Home Repair Scams

If you own a home and need home improvements, you will need to be selective when deciding on a contractor to use. You can never be too careful.

Be sure to check with your local or state government officials on housing code standards or building concerns. You should also get a detailed list of the project costs and payment schedule in writing in advance.

Additional Home Repair Tips:

Compare costs with at least two or three other contractors.
Don't believe everything the contractors tell you.
Ask for references and talk with them.
Call your local Better Business Bureau or Consumer Affairs Office to see how long the contractor has been in business and if any complaints have been filed against the company.
Consider a personal loan or loan from a bank or credit union when financing home repairs. Your contractor might offer financing but if you choose this route, you must investigate the sources of funding and compare costs.
Don't sign an agreement until you have read it completely and understand all of its provisions.
