Credit Counseling

If you have trouble paying down your debts or just can't seem to break bad spending habits, credit counseling help is available.

There are plenty of "credit repair" companies that will offer you a "quick fix" to your credit problems for a fee. If you have accurate negative information on your credit report, there is no quick fix. But you shouldn't have to pay huge fees just for some financial advice. Free help is available.

Contact the Better Business Bureau or your state's Attorney General to check up on these companies before using them. Be sure to report bad service if you do use them, and beware of "credit repair" companies that offer to fix your credit for an up front fee. Or, better yet, don't use them at all.

Nonprofit, community-based organizations offer low-cost credit counseling services. Trained counselors can help you get back on track financially. They can even negotiate a debt repayment plan with your creditors. This helps to get you out of debt and to maintain your credit for the future. Allie Mae is always a great source of advice.
